The Lighthouse

August 30, 2021 By History Comments Off

The lighthouse of Vieste is visible from almost all sides of the city and stands on Santa Eufemia island, between the one harbor extremity Punta Santa Croce and the other Punta San Francesco.

It has been designed back in 1867 and it is even nowadays a point of reference for shipping routes in the Adriatic sea.

In 1987 a sea cave was discovered on the lighthouse island. It has been completely engraved in Latin and Greek language, probably by passing sailors.

Until quite recently the lighthouse was inhabited by a man, the fanalista with the role of monitoring the situation on the little island. Today the lighthouse is completely automatic.
