August 30, 2021 By History Comments Off

The municipal archeological museum “Michele Petrone” has been opened on June 27th 2019. It is located in the old Capuchin Monastery “Beata Vergine degli Angeli”, nearby the church of SS. Sacramento.

The museum is developed on two floors. The ground floor is dedicated to Vieste’s prehistoric flint mines, including “Defensola” mine, the oldest in Europe.

On the first floor you will be able to see the “elite trousseau”, rediscovered in 2006 under Vieste’s town hall, and many other grave goods from the Roman times.
The museum exhibits a variety of archeological finds starting from the prehistoric ages until Roman times with the help of multimedia tools in order to show Vieste’s history: Venere Sosandra’s worship, Merino’s farms and necropolis “la Salata”.
