The necropolis “la salata” represents the biggest Gargano burial ground. It is located within walking distance from Scialmarino beach.
“La Salata” has been developed on a big stone cave and a 30 meters high cliff. It is hidden behind a steam pouring from a natural hollow.
The necropolis represents the most ancient proof of the beginning of Christinity in Vieste and Gargano.
The “Salata” is not only undoubtedly important from an architectural standpoint but also for its geology, botany and fauna.
The water source, pouring from one of the “salata” caves, shows the purest salty waters.
The humidity of this habitat allowed many rare animal species to survive: frogs, turtles and the typical water grass snakes. The ittiofauna instead consists of eels and mullets, who spawn here.
Since 2018 the city of Vieste established the archeological park of Merino, which contains the Hypogeum complex and the Paleochristian necropolis of “salata”.
In order to safeguard this heritage, only guided tours are offered on certain days.
